Van Drove in Front of a Train at Mindszent, Several People Died

A van drove in front of a train in Csongrád-Csanád county, Mindszent, at the Déli street railway crossing on Tuesday morning, just before seven o’clock, the police reported. There are several dead and more injured in the accident, exact figures have not been reported yet.

According to Delmagyar.hu’s information, seven people died, but this has not been officially confirmed yet. Promenad24.hu in Hódmezővásárhely reported five dead.

The train from Szentes to Hódmezővásárhely derailed from the force of the collision. The road was blocked for the duration of the rescue and scene investigation, traffic has been diverted.

According to Mávinform, there were twenty-two passengers on the train, two of whom were seriously injured and eight more easily injured. The motor car overturned and it will be lifted onto the rails with a railway crane and the damaged track will have to be restored. Due to the works, rail traffic on this section is expected to be suspended until Wednesday morning.

According to MÁV, the light barrier was in operation at the time of the accident, and the van was driven onto the rails despite the prohibited signal.

Professional firefighters from Hódmezővásárhely, Szentes and Szeged, as well as the volunteer firefighters from Szabolcs, were alerted to the accident. The technical rescue has been managed by the Disaster Management Operations Service. An ambulance helicopter also arrived at the scene.

On October 14th last year, three people died in a similar accident at Csákánydoroszló in Vas County. The light barrier still worked, and the driver drove onto the rails despite the forbidden signal.
