Opposition Párbeszéd Votes Against Re-Electing Orbán

Opposition Párbeszéd lawmakers voted against re-electing Viktor Orbán as prime minister before walking out of parliament during Orbán’s inaugural speech.

Párbeszéd group leader Bence Tordai told a press conference the party’s “no” vote represented the two million voters who had backed the opposition list in the April general election. Tordai insisted that Orbán had kept voters in the dark during the election campaign about the government’s plans, so “they didn’t give their assent to Viktor Orbán… on any specific issue.” Párbeszéd lawmaker Tamás Mellár accused Orbán of neglecting “historic opportunities” presented over the past twelve years. He said the government had used EU funds to “build a system of semi-feudal power” instead of using the funds for their real purpose of financing the country’s catch-up with the rest of the bloc.
