The renovation of the Faculty of State and Law of the University of Szeged (SZTE) has been completed, the investment realized with 1.885 billion forints of government support was handed over on Friday.
János Lázár, Minister of Construction and Investment, a former student of the faculty, said at the ceremony that Szeged plays an important role in the scientific and cultural life of the country. The goal of the government is for the city to regain the social, economic, and public political status that the country’s leaders intended for it after the Trianon peace decree by installing the University of Cluj in Szeged.
Today, the world and Hungary are facing new challenges. Thirty years after the end of the Soviet Union, we are again rushing towards a bipolar world – said the politician. Not only is the world polarized again geographically, economically and in terms of power, but two world ideals – the pro-integrationists and the sovereignists – are also facing each other, he emphasized. Those who think about politics and take positions have a huge role in helping Hungary find its place amid the redrawing of the balance of power, he added. János Lázár said that in the past two decades, as a legislator, he learned that the legal system, the Basic Law, the constitutional order and related laws really determine the framework of everyday life. Today’s Hungarian legal system – he continued – provides an opportunity to emphasize the importance of self-determination even during integration.
The politician also touched on the fact that the goal of the university model change is to create the conditions for high-quality, international-standard Hungarian higher education. László Trócsányi, former student of the faculty and current professor, member of the Board of Trustees of the Szeged University Foundation, recalled that the former deans of the institution tried to renovate the building for several decades. The reconstruction resulted in a building in keeping with the spirit of the age, where it is good for a young person to come and learn. Dean Márta Görög said that the faculty, which is 150 years old this year, was able to return to its main building after three years, because on September 9, 2019, the hurricane-force storm severely damaged the roof structure. The renovated building was prepared for the higher education of the future, for those students who are preparing to serve society in the coming decades – emphasized the professor. During the reconstruction, the facade of the building, which was originally intended as a bourgeois girls’ school in 1882, was renovated, the inner courtyard was covered, work rooms were created, the dome, which is also important from a cityscape point of view, was rebuilt, and a memorial place and research space were created in the attic. The contractor of the investment was Ferroép Zrt. of Szeged.
