AC: Book Club – The Great Gatsby and Jazz Age

Culture

Date: 11 April at 17.00-18.00

Venue: American Corner Szeged

As The Vogue columnist Alexandra Macon wrote: ”You know the story: The setting is Long Island at the height of the Roaring Twenties. Jay Gatsby—the ultimate enigma—is spinning lies and throwing parties in an effort to transcend his class and get the girl (the one that’s always been too good for him). He’s after the American dream after all.”
The book club session offers a chance for an informal overview and discussion of Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Key themes include the jazz age, bootleggers, flappers, illusions, romance, dream, success and failure. Baz Luhrmann’s nostalgic representation of the jazz age in his film adaptation of the novel will also be involved in the discussion.
